About us

Picture
We provide food to the residents of the North End of Saint John and increase access to healthy food through these programs:

  • Food Bank Every TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY – We provide food each week to those who are struggling to make ends meet.

  • After the Bell  In the Summer (July & August), snacks for school age children.

We have been fortunate to have corporate and individual donors whose generosity helps us keep food in the pantry every week. But the quantity of food we need is growing and we strive for even healthier choices - so the need for donations is always there.

Food Bank Tuesdays & Wednesdays
The North End Food Bank is open every Tues from 10-1:00 and Wed from 1:00-3:00

We’ve been providing food to the North End of Saint John since 1987 when Marie Corkery first founded the North End Food Basket - a place with an atmosphere of warmth and hospitality. Marie was a retired teacher and passionate about her north end community. Marie passed away recently but her legacy of ensuring people in the North End of Saint John aren’t hungry lives on.  She spent decades doing this work at local, provincial, and national levels. She truly enjoyed interacting with her community in this way and was awarded The Queens Jubilee Medal for her dedication and service.

Supported by a dedicated group of volunteers and community members, the North End Food Bank continues to meet the growing needs of Saint John's North End residents.

After the Bell Program (Summertime only)
Every summer we run our After the Bell program providing our families with summer snacks for kids.

Food Banks Canada offers 8 weeks’ worth of food packs over the summer to us, with the understanding that many kids don’t have school-based food program support during the summer. These child-friendly, nutritious food packs allow young people to take home food to fill the gaps when other food supports – like school breakfast or lunch programs – aren’t available. They provide us with funding to purchase fresh food (ex. fruits & vegetables) to add to each pack.

north End Food Bank earns
Food Banks Canada’s

Standards of Excellence accreditation!

Picture
We are excited to share that we’ve been accredited through Food Banks Canada’s Standards of Excellence program.

We earned this accreditation by meeting all 78 standards in 6 key areas: governance and administration, people management, financial and legal, client service and care, public engagement and fundraising, and food operations and food safety - it took us two years to meet the criteria! This included everything from installing proper dish washing and hand washing sinks, installing more modern steel shelves (easy clean), updating our written policies and procedures (it's a very large 68-page binder), and more! Yes, everything that happens here at the North End Food Bank was updated, from bylaws to how we clean the floors!

What it means for us to have this accreditation:
1. Knowing that we are operating in an efficient and safe way for our clients and volunteers.
2. It's holding us to a standard of care.
3. We are a member in good standing at Food Banks Canada & FeedNB which allows us to benefit from their programs, services and grants.
